Komorebi is a Japanese word for sunlight filtering through tree leaves.
This collection is based on a series of abstract photographs Al has taken while hiking in Victoria, mainly around Mt Donna Buang. These paintings explore the light, colour, quiet presence and calm of nature. They reflect a sense of ease and connection, an invitation to slow down, let go, and simply be. For Al, nature has long been a place of refuge from trauma and grief, offering stillness, clarity, and a return to self. This series expresses a more effortless way of being and a hope for a more gentle, compassionate world.
In contrast with the rest of the Komorebi collection, the final piece Komorebi in paint no.10 is violent, burning, suffering, there is no peace here. Hopefully one day the children of Palestine can watch the sunlight streaming through tree leaves instead of bombs streaming from the sky.
